Ben Payne

British
Nationality:
A former behavioural therapist turned self-taught painter, chasing Turner-esque light and atmosphere across coast and sky.
Ben Payne worked as a behavioural therapist specialising in autism before turning to painting full time some twenty years ago. Largely self-taught, he credits his mother's early instruction in observation and draftsmanship for the foundations of his technique.
He describes his own style as imagined realism — landscapes and seascapes built around light and atmosphere rather than strict topographical accuracy, in a tradition that owes a clear debt to J.M.W. Turner's handling of radiance and sky. Early coastline-inspired paintings launched his gallery career, and he has since sold work to collectors in 22 countries, alongside long-standing relationships with UK galleries.
Now based on the south coast of England, he continues to work primarily in oils, returning often to the coastline and open sky that first defined his practice.
At Dane Manor Fine Art, his collection includes Low Sun To The West, Glow From Within and Fair Skies Ahead.
