Jimmy Law

South African
Nationality:
A South African figurative painter whose kaleidoscopic portraits contrast meticulous facial detail with bold, blocky abstraction.
Jimmy Law was born in South Africa in 1970 and worked as a freelance graphic designer and comic book illustrator before turning to fine art — a background that still shapes the bold, graphic quality of his painting today.
His portraits are instantly recognisable: large brushes and a palette knife combine minute, tightly controlled detail across the face with broad, blocky strokes that let the rest of the figure blur into abstraction. The contrast gives his subjects — from anonymous feminine figures to celebrity portraits of Jack Nicholson and Marilyn Monroe — a kaleidoscopic, almost fractured intensity.
He has built an extensive exhibition history across South Africa and internationally, with shows in the UK and France.
At Dane Manor Fine Art, his collection includes Shopping, Changes and Betrayal.
