The Trunk Of Funk

British
Nationality:
A Macclesfield-based mixed media artist layering photography, gold leaf and Japanese textile motifs into intricately detailed contemporary works.
The Trunk Of Funk is the working name of mixed media artist Gareth Tristan Evans, born in Singapore, raised in a remote Welsh valley, and now based in Macclesfield, England. His practice ranges from photography to traditional pen and brush, and each piece is hand crafted using materials chosen deliberately for their effect — gold leaf, acrylics, Hanko stamps, Japanese postage stamps and 3D relief tiles among them.
His work draws on childhood memories, vintage textiles and street art, built up in meticulous layers rather than resolved in a single gesture. Unconstrained by any single tradition, he moves freely between materials and techniques to build compositions with real physical depth and texture.
His Urban Geisha series is his best-known body of work: a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional Geisha that fuses street art aesthetics with Eastern symbolism, decorative stamps and gilded detail. Described as an emerging mixed media artist, he has been gathering increasing interest from contemporary art collectors in the UK and abroad.
At Dane Manor Fine Art, his intricately layered pieces — including Patience Soul, Pilgrim, Sphinx Mekhat and Porcelain — are available as limited edition prints, with Deluxe editions for several of his most detailed compositions.
